Since the introduction of Defi smart contracts onto Ethereum, the TVL (Total Value Locked) in Defi smart contracts grew from $0 in 2017 to a peak of over $100b in 2021 (). Cardano added smart contract capabilities to the blockchain in September 2021, and there are already hundreds of dApps on the blockchain, with hundreds more in development.
